Grand Hotel Plaza

The room was clean enough but dated, with worn furniture, a very firm bed, and no modern amenities beyond a ~2012 Panasonic TV. For €375 for one night in May, it was nowhere near the value I'd expect. A similarly equipped hotel about five minutes farther from the Spanish Steps cost me €200 and the front desk didn't harass me. A week before arriving, I emailed to ask about an upgrade and got no reply. Check-in was already past its scheduled time when I arrived, and nobody apologized. Then they gave me the wrong room twice: first, a key to someone else's room, then a room in the wrong category. I had to lug my bags downstairs each time, and nobody apologized either. After the second mistake, instead of sorting it out, the front desk argued that the room type on my confirmation email didn't exist, even though I'd booked it directly on their website. I had to show all my documents before they finally gave me the correct room, still with an attitude, about an hour after check-in was supposed to start. This was the most expensive and worst hotel of my trip to Italy. You can find much better service and rooms in Rome for less. The front desk was rude and disorganized, with no accountability. Save yourself the frustration and book another reasonably priced hotel.

I've spent 4000 nights in Marriott hotels, but when I'm in Rome, Italy, I try to stay here. It's a lovely property with amazing architecture, spacious and comfortable rooms, and a tremendous breakfast buffet. The location is central, close to the metro, and there's a taxi stand right across the street. The hotel is on Corso, which is traffic-free at least part of the time. On Friday and Saturday nights there's a piano player. The person in charge is a woman, and on this latest trip I brought her flowers. She was very nice to me. I could say lots more good things about the hotel. It doesn't have fancy modern furniture, if that's what you're after, and the fitness center is embarrassing. Still, you can stretch and do some free weights. I added some pictures, including one looking down onto the street from my window.

The location is good and convenient, which is the one thing I can honestly praise. The rooms are terribly old and neglected, with everything worn out and poorly maintained, and the breakfast was awful. My group had three separate rooms, and money was stolen from all three. That's a serious security problem. The stay was far too expensive for what you get. I wouldn't recommend it.

We had chosen the hotel for a New Year's Eve celebration with a group of 13, hoping for a memorable evening, but it was disorganized and fell short of what we expected. The midnight plans were the biggest disappointment. We were eating downstairs and got no clear information or coordination beforehand. Eventually we were told to go “upstairs to the top,” but after making the trip, we found the door locked. We couldn't get to the viewing area and missed most of the fireworks. Champagne was eventually served outside, which was a thoughtful gesture, but the lack of organization kept us from enjoying the moment as the new year began. Dinner was disappointing for the occasion and the price. Service was uneven: I ordered a vodka martini and first got a gin martini, then an espresso martini, neither of which was right. The complimentary wine refills were very slow, with long waits unless we asked repeatedly. The vocalist also didn't meet the standard you'd expect at a major holiday event, and it affected the atmosphere.
