Being right by the Metro makes the price worthwhile. La Casa del Capitano is a bed and breakfast in a converted apartment, with more of an AirBnB feel than a hotel. There are three rooms, and no staff on site. Our room was spacious by European standards and looked out onto Piazza Barbarini. Just around the block there’s pretty much everything: the subway, restaurants, a tabacco shop, toy store, ATM, hair dresser, taxi stand, gelato stand and plenty of coffee shops. It’s two Metro stops from the terminal and train station.

The person who greeted us was very kind and helpful, and the rooms were really clean. They’re comfortably spacious, though the bathroom is only a decent size. Breakfast was decent and had what we needed, but may not be well suited to people with intolerances or allergies. The location is excellent, about 10 minutes from the Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps, and just a few meters from the subway. The furnishings feel retro and probably quite old, and the bed wasn’t especially comfortable. Some maintenance could be improved. Finding the entrance isn’t easy: it’s at number 2 on the square next to the Risto Pub.

The location is good, close to almost everything in Rome, and the accommodation has a nice retro, antique feel. It was about what I expected, so I’d say it’s fairly recommendable. The room is on a floor with no elevator, and the place isn’t accessible for people with disabilities. A few drawbacks: the taps don’t shut properly, there’s a slight sewer smell, the air conditioner is portable, and breakfast is just a few biscuits and not much else.
