Hotel Astoria is very well placed by Piazza San Marco, which is a real convenience in Venice. But I found it one of my least favorite hostels in Europe. My four-bed room had three beds squeezed closely together, and the bathroom felt dated. You had to hold the shower head by hand. Things around Venice can be pricier and a bit less nice, and this place fit that exactly. Maybe there aren't many better choices, but I'll look elsewhere next time.

It was hot in Venice, and after dinner we came back to find that the AC unit in our room had stopped working. At check-in we'd been told ours was the only room with air conditioning, and that was one reason it cost more. It had been working when we arrived. The clerk on duty later insisted we never had AC, even after I pointed out the unit. He was extremely rude. I rarely complain or write bad reviews, but I wanted to mention this so someone else doesn't have the same experience.

For such a low price, I can't believe the hotel is right where it is. It's a great option, so don't settle for a cheaper place on the mainland. The room also has a handy VOIP phone system for calling home at 10c per minute. Awesome.

Its best feature is the location, but there are lots of problems and a bad smell. I'd only suggest it to people who are able to put up with things.
