We booked a “superior” apartment for two nights. When we first arrived it didn’t look great, but we didn’t inspect it closely, and the host didn’t tell us about any problems. That evening we discovered the air conditioning was so loud nobody could sleep, even though it was over 30C outside. The apartment was barely cleaned and very dirty, and the stained sheets made sleeping there disgusting. It seemed to be in terrible shape, as if it hadn’t been repaired for around 10 years. We eventually tried to sleep with the noisy AC switched off, but the apartment heated up fast to an unbearable temperature, so we opened the window. Then huge numbers of mosquitoes came in and bit us. There was no mosquito net, which is a must in Venice. We got no more than two hours of sleep. It was the worst experience of our travels. We had booked two nights, but after that sleepless first night we told the host early in the morning that we were leaving because of these conditions. The host cancelled our reservation, and the price showed zero euros, but we were still charged the full amount.
