Camping Fusina

The restaurant was a highlight for us: the food was delicious, service quick, and prices lower than we’re used to in the UK. Getting to Venice was easy too, with a calm 25-minute ferry ride from Fusina. A return ticket was €15 per person, or €30 for a three-day pass. We spent four days and three nights in an oliandri lodge with two single beds, a desk, and a bathroom. After the first night, we came back to find ants all over the place. I’m terrified of them, so it was a horrible surprise. We understand that nature does its thing, but some preventive measures could help stop this happening to other guests. Thankfully, staff moved us to another lodge of the same kind, and we were much happier there, with no ants. The location is fantastic, and the staff were kind and accommodating. We really enjoyed our stay and would come back, though we’d choose a bigger lodge and hope for fewer ants. Thank you to the staff, and I hope this doesn’t sound rude.

The main thing that bothered me was the rule about holding onto guests’ IDs until they pay and check out. Keeping someone’s ID as a deposit is illegal anywhere, as far as I understand. I don’t think they mean to do anything harmful with it, but it’s the principle. There are other ways to ensure people pay, and I don’t see why guests can’t settle the bill in advance. Apart from that, it’s a lovely campsite with comfortable facilities. There are plenty of electrical outlets, and the showers and toilets were clean. We stayed two nights and arrived quite late the first evening, but someone still came to open the gate and show us where to park our RV. It’s a great base for day trips to Venice, with the ferry right by the entrance. Late checkout is also available, which is handy if you want to sightsee on your final day.

Getting into Venice and out to the islands is easy from here, so the location works really well. The campsite itself is a free-for-all for finding a space. That’s okay when it’s quiet, but when it fills up, there are no proper pitches and a pleasant spot can turn into a mess of cars, tents, motorhomes, and noise. The facilities are either very old or modern but badly worn. The young people at reception don’t seem invested in standards, so I wouldn’t expect much from them. Best to keep to your own facilities, visit Venice, then head north to the Dolomites.

The water taxi is almost right outside the site and takes around 20-30 minutes to get into Venice. That’s the big plus. I managed to book at the last minute, which was helpful, and there’s lots of space across three large fields, with plenty of electric hookups. Facilities are okay, though they could use an update and a better clean. The staff were friendly and enthusiastic, and it’s dog friendly. It is under the airport flight path, but nights aren’t too bad. Mornings can be another story: when it’s misty, cargo ships and cruise ships heading into port sound their horns almost nonstop, making it impossible to sleep.
