I was notified by Booking.com that my reservation had been cancelled less than a day before I was due to arrive in Venice. It was for Valentine's Day during Carneval, and the booking had been confirmed by the hotel more than a month earlier. There was no advance notice or explanation. More than a week later, the hotel still hadn’t contacted me. I can’t see a realistic excuse for waiting until the last moment. It makes me suspect they wanted to rent the room for more money, though that’s my assumption. I expect they may blame maintenance or say the room wasn’t ready, perhaps the same explanation they gave Booking.com. I’d seen reviews on Booking.com, listed under Santa Croce 241, and on Google Maps mentioning earlier cancellations, sometimes two weeks before arrival. I knew I was taking a risk. With two weeks’ notice, I could have found another place or changed my plans. Trying to sort it out on the day was almost impossible. I’m usually understanding when travel plans go wrong and don’t nitpick or bash people who are trying, but this felt different. I know they won’t cancel every booking, but I strongly urge anyone drawn in by the price and location to reconsider. I arrived in Venice and had to search for somewhere else on my phone, hoping for internet, while trying to watch my bags in the crowds of tourists pushing past. That really happened to me. It’s not worth it.

We had a clean, comfortable room with a lovely canal view, and its Venetian decor added to the atmosphere. The staff were welcoming and attentive. Special thanks to the gentleman with glasses and the Italian girl at reception, their hospitality made a difference. The hotel is right by the Grand Canal, around a five-minute walk from both the bus and train stations. There are plenty of shops and cafés nearby, and the location made it easy to explore. It’s officially a three-star hotel, though I felt it deserved more. Some renovation and faster internet could bring the experience up to five-star-plus. We had a lovely stay and would gladly return.

We were in a stressful bind when we discovered our reservation at another hotel had been lost. Hotel Canal took us in the same day we arrived in Venice, at a reasonable rate, and we really appreciated the staff making that possible. Our room was clean and had a great view. Thanks for helping us out.

The hotel is a little old, but it was very clean. The rooms were beautiful, and for one of the cheaper hotels in Venice, I thought it was amazing. Breakfast was decent, and the location right on the Grand Canal was hard to beat. The Asian lady at reception was friendly and let us check in two hours early. I don’t get all the bad reviews, this place is great!
