Hotel Pausania

The service here was shocking, and this was a horrible start to our holiday. We arrived for a three-night stay in January and were put in the only room directly off the lobby, beside the public toilet. It looked nothing like the photos and wasn't soundproof at all. After a very long travel day, we could hear every lobby conversation, door, elevator call, and toilet visit. We politely asked to move, since earlier reviews said the hotel was accommodating. They told us they were full and to return at 9:30 pm to ask about moving the next day. But Booking.com showed every room type available for that night and the other two nights. When we went back to ask about the contradiction, the man at reception was rude, confrontational, and unhelpful. During a three-way phone conversation, he questioned why we cared so much when we'd only booked a standard room. We explained we'd spent a lot on this holiday and were the only people paying the standard rate who'd been put beside a toilet. We offered to pay the difference for an upgrade, but were told we couldn't, and that only one superior room was left. Eventually we said we'd find another hotel. Only then did they admit they were waiting until 9:30 pm because that was the cutoff for same-day bookings, and didn't want to change rooms because housekeeping couldn't turn ours over that night and they might lose a night's income. He eventually moved us after we said we were leaving, since we'd been up since 3 am and couldn't sleep in that room. He stormed in, shoved my coat at me, asked how much of the room we'd used, complained about the crinkled sheets, and checked that we hadn't got into bed. He handed us our half-drunk water, pulled our coats off the hangers, and gestured at a makeup wipe in the bin as if we should collect everything. The room definitely wasn't cleaned after us. He got a key to the new room and sent us off. The next day there was a power cut in the area, which wasn't the hotel's fault. But there was ridiculously loud beeping outside our room, and when we came down to the lobby in complete darkness, the receptionist acted as if nothing was wrong. Nobody explained how far the outage extended or whether it was normal or something to worry about.
