San Geremia feels like a living record of Venice’s history, with a sacred atmosphere that’s both ancient and remarkably preserved. After the busy streets, the church opens into a space that feels still and enormous. Its Grand Canal facade bears an iconic inscription, and unlike the city’s more tourist-heavy cathedrals, this one retains a strong sense of pilgrimage and spiritual quiet. The history stretches back a millennium: worship has taken place here since the 11th century, and the relics of Saint Lucy have rested here since 1860. The 12th-century Romanesque bell tower, one of Venice’s oldest brick campaniles, stands in striking contrast to the light 18th-century Neoclassical interior designed by Carlo Corbellini.

This small church, away from the main paths, was a highlight of our trip through Venice, with its many historically important churches. It’s peaceful and holds the sanctuary of Santa Lucia. Entry is free, though donations are welcome, and photos aren’t allowed inside because it’s a sacred space. I found it surprisingly moving, even as a godless heathen. Highly recommend.

This church is named after our daughter, so we loved visiting. There are some lovely artworks inside. They recommend a donation at the entrance, but it isn’t required.

Don’t miss the amazing art downstairs. You can view her in the center and walk around for a closer look. The church is beautiful, full of historic relics and history, with so much centered on St. Lucia alongside Christ. Her story of martyrdom and her deeds are remembered and cherished. Visiting is free. They ask you to cover your shoulders, take no photos, and respect the church’s quiet and peace.

The site has been used for worship since the 11th century, though the present church building dates to 1753. Its bell tower, built in the 12th century, is among the oldest in Venice. In the sacristy, the best-known artwork is Tintoretto’s “Holy Family.”
