Santa Margherita Guesthouse

We visited at the end of June, peak tourist season, but hardly saw anyone around. It felt as if we had the place to ourselves. Everything was walkable, and being away from the busy center made it quiet, while still close enough to return for a quick nap. The room was large and clean, and for the price, it was wonderful. It's a guesthouse, as stated, rather than a hotel, so there's no daily housekeeping. For stays longer than four days, they provide clean towels on day four and clean the room twice a week. There are no elevators, so keep that in mind. Quiet, clean, walkable, and affordable. I'd recommend it to anyone visiting Venice.

The location was great, and we liked having a coffee machine in the kitchen. Beyond that, the room smelled musty, there were mosquitoes everywhere, and the bed was uncomfortable with a flat, hard pillow. There was no key for the safe, so we couldn't secure our valuables. We never met the host, and she didn't reply to either of our last two messages. One was a simple question about the train station; the other asked if she could ask the inconsiderate guests above us to quiet down. They were very loud until 2-3 in the morning, and the room isn't well soundproofed, so light sleepers should keep that in mind. Given these issues and the price, we wouldn't stay here again.

We liked how quiet it was at night, on a canal with little traffic, and there are a few nearby squares with everything from tapas to dinner. The station is around a 15-minute walk away. Check-in was by code, with the key left in our room, so we never saw the owners. The room was clean and tidy, with air conditioning and a bathroom. The fridge was a bit noisy, but you can unplug it. We enjoyed our stay and recommend the place.

We had a lovely stay, and the air conditioning worked really well in the humid August heat. Maria was so kind and helpful, with lots of tips and local recommendations for the city.
