I keep thinking about this place even after getting home. It was a much-needed pause between Tokyo and Kyoto/Osaka, just soaking our aching muscles, sipping tea, and looking out at the garden for hours. Atami is more of a local seaside getaway than a foreign tourist destination, and Atami Sekitei felt like a hidden gem. We were looking for natural onsen, big private baths for a group of friends, and good food, and found all of that here. The private bath in our room could comfortably fit at least four people. You can also book private onsens by the hour or use the public baths for men and women. The food was served in the on-site restaurant rather than in the room, and honestly I liked it more than my Michelin restaurant meal in Kyoto. The hostess was incredibly kind. We used Google translate to communicate and stayed open-minded about the food, which made both meals a delight. Front desk staff spoke English and were helpful too. When rain was forecast, they quietly left umbrellas at everyone's doors. The property is stunning and beautifully kept, with a Japanese garden around every corner. The traditional rooms have been maintained and renovated over time. The paths and steps are cobblestone, so it won't work well for wheelchairs or strollers. I did wish for the mountain or river views some larger places have from their private onsens or balconies, and for in-room dining, though I understand that may be harder with the spread-out rooms. A side note: you can find many of the ingredients from the meals in the market streets or the Shinkansen station mall if you want to take some home as souvenirs. My tip is to send big suitcases from your first hotel straight to your next stop through Yamato, then spend a day or two in Atami with just a backpack. Your bags should be waiting at your next hotel. I'd definitely suggest giving this place a try.

The rooms and service were very good, and both dinner and breakfast at the hotel were excellent. It's a little far from central Atami, though, with no restaurants nearby.

We only stayed one night, and I wish we'd booked longer. The room with a private onsen was lovely, and the whole place felt quiet and peaceful. The meals were some of the best I've had, no exaggeration. They used local ingredients and prepared them really well. I left each meal full and happy with what was served. Staff were attentive and generally spoke English, which made things easy as tourists. They explained everything clearly and gave us the kind of service that's hard to find elsewhere. I can't recommend this enough. A must-do when you're in Japan.

We booked the villa with its own onsen and had a great time. The staff were so kind and helpful, the food was fabulous, and the bath was wonderfully relaxing. We felt we got really good value for our money.

The food was a highlight, with course after course of tasty seasonal Japanese ingredients, beautifully presented and filling. Dinner and breakfast were included, and everything was taken care of. I'll definitely come back. Thanks for another lovely stay! This was my second visit to Atami Sekitei, and both times we came to Atami especially for this Ryokan. I'd dreamed of returning for years, even through the pandemic, and it was just as good as I remembered. The place feels zen and private, with relatively few guests around, and it's perfect for unwinding. Our suite had indoor and outdoor onsens, and the bathwater was already hot and running when we arrived. The rooms are generously sized, full suites with a private hallway, backyard, bathroom, washroom, and living room. If you don't choose an in-suite onsen, there are public ones too. They provide lovely yukata, layered up in winter, plus welcome tea and sweets, unlimited green tea, and complimentary cold beer and water. There was a fresh Japanese floral arrangement in our room. On my first visit a pianist played live, though I didn't notice that on the second. I loved the gardens, stone steps, and little bridge around the Ryokan. The paths aren't very accessible, which didn't bother me, but keep it in mind before booking. There were a few cobwebs, but I chose to focus on the lovely landscaping, architecture, clean living spaces, and well-stocked bathroom amenities, including full-sized branded skincare. There's always something to pick at, but I preferred to see the beauty.
