Gifu Grand Hotel

Because I visited on a business trip during the COVID pandemic, some parts of the experience were limited. Even so, I had a wonderful winter night. Snow covered everything, and my room on the top floor had an impressive view. Best of all, I had the onsen area entirely to myself. Breakfast came in individual portions because of COVID, but the quality was still there. I found it delicious and very nutritious.

The view was magnificent, and the hotel is beautiful. The staff were very friendly.

The hotel is upscale and the rooms are nice, but our stay was average at best. The futons were uncomfortable, and the shower felt like a riot-control device. The spa area was lovely, though the in-house restaurant we tried wasn’t very good. They promote a great river view, but the hotel is several blocks from the river. One night we found another hotel right on the riverbank and wished we’d seen it first. The mountain and Gifu Castle views are nice, though. There’s a free shuttle to the park and the train and bus station, but it stops before 5pm, so plan your travel early. It’s a nice place, but you can probably find somewhere better.

The room’s view of the river and mountains was spectacular, and the accommodation was excellent. Staff were helpful and respectful. The hotel itself was amazing, but if you’re staying more than one night, bring plenty of yen and a credit card. There are few restaurants and they’re extremely expensive. The nearest Lawson or 7 11 is more than a mile away.
