Manten no Yado

Our family was the only one staying that night, and the service we got was really lovely. With just 8 rooms, the place feels quiet and clean. Dinner was delicious and so filling, and breakfast was just as good. We had a great time. The winter sky was overcast, so we didn't get to see the stars, but having a private outdoor onsen in the room more than made up for that. I'd love to come back someday, probably for a longer stay.

The ski resort is only a one-minute walk away, so you can ski right there. The hotel has a cozy Japanese-style feel, with just 8 rooms, and the onsen in the room is amazing. Having it outdoors was a surprise. It's not the kind of place you'd normally expect to find near a ski mountain.

The room and the things provided in it were both very good quality and felt new. Dinner was one of the best I've had at a ryokan, with delicious food and good quality ingredients.

We stayed one night in a Japanese-Western room. The inn is small, with only eight rooms, but the rooms with open-air baths, the private dining spaces, and the rest of the interior were clean, roomy, and comfortable. The mountain view of the autumn leaves was lovely, the air felt fresh, and my skin felt smooth. I was nervous about bears, though. The rate felt steep for a single inn far up in the mountains, about what you'd pay at a luxury inn. The actual service was more like a modest, rural, homey inn, without the training or hospitality you might expect at a luxury place. I was okay with that, but it's better to know what to expect. It could be a great spot to simply relax and do nothing. There was coffee in the lounge, and mineral water, tea, and tea bags in the rooms. Drinks in the fridge cost extra. There was also a plan for complimentary fridge drinks, but the selection didn't appeal to me and there were only three kinds per person. I'm glad we didn't choose it. I'd bring my own drinks.
