The room looked tidy at first, but under the bed we found used tissues, socks, and a few other unidentifiable things. It was also poorer value than other places at a similar price, with no fridge or private toilet. The onsen was decent, the room had useful information in English, it was very quiet, and the ski resort was close. Still, check-in was the coldest service we experienced in four weeks in Japan. There was no warmth or personality, and I felt more like an unwanted admin task than a guest. I never saw the hosts again after check-in, and wondered if they were avoiding guests. I’d read the reviews and felt uneasy, but booked two nights anyway despite my instincts. Trust your intuition.
