Happy Talk

I only met the male owner, who was very nice. The place is handy for the free shuttles to some resorts, which stop right outside, but getting to the main shuttle takes a bit more effort. It’s a 5 to 7 minute walk uphill to the Echoland Spicy stop on the V2 line, which goes to Happo bus terminal. Aeon market is walkable too, though it’s about 15 minutes each way. There’s only one shower for the whole place, open from 4 to 11 pm, so plan around that. The men’s restroom sometimes smelled of sewage. I either got used to it or it wasn’t always noticeable.

I felt safe here as an 18-year-old solo female traveler, both leaving my things in the room and walking around at night. The area felt very safe. The kind family who run the place even welcomed my very late arrival and very early departure. They speak Japanese and English and had lots of suggestions for things to do. There’s a microwave, fridge, and complimentary coffee in the hallway, plus free ski storage and discounts on rentals. Showers are downstairs, and towels cost 300 yen. It’s about a 30-second walk to the free bus shuttle, or 10 to 15 minutes on foot to the paid shuttle. Echoland, with restaurants, bars, gift shops, a konbini, and other activities, is around a 10-minute walk away. An onsen is about an 8-minute bus ride or a 20-minute walk. This was one of the best places I stayed on my trip to Japan, and I’d definitely return.

The owners were so welcoming and helpful. They stayed up until 2:30 am to greet me, and I had a great stay at happy talk. I’ll definitely stay there again when I come back.

A cozy, basic place run by a wonderful older couple. For this area, I thought it was pretty good value.
