Tenryu Ryokan

I only ended up at the hotel because everywhere else was booked that night, but I’m glad I did. Having a little room to myself and sleeping on a futon made for a really nice, authentic stay. The owner doesn’t speak English, yet everything worked out fine. I’d definitely return.

The room and toilet were clean and cozy, with all the facilities and towels, plus AC. For the price, it was fair, and the location was perfect, next to the city center and station.

It’s only a five-minute walk from Hiroshima station, and you get a bit of privacy for about the price of a dorm bed. My main issue was the owner: he didn’t seem happy to welcome tourists, unless maybe they were Japanese, and wouldn’t even answer greetings. His wife, I presume, was always kind. There’s a midnight curfew, no smoking room, and smoking is allowed in the corridors. The walls are very thin, so nights can be noisy. The pillows were really uncomfortable, and Wi-Fi wasn’t available around the clock.

For this price, it’s totally worth it. The hotel is old-fashioned Japanese style and feels like an authentic experience. A sento bathhouse about 15 minutes away on foot is worth a visit too. You get a room with AC, a futon, yukata, and towel, plus disposable razors and toothbrushes. Leave your shoes at the entrance and use the slippers provided. The room is comfortable enough for a night or two, though that’s about all it offers. If you don’t speak Japanese, things may be a little tricky, but Google Translate should help. It’s probably about as cheap as you’ll find within walking distance of the station in Hiroshima, and it’s run by a kindly older man.
