Ryokan Chaume

We stopped overnight in the middle of our Shimanami bike ride and were met with wonderful hospitality. The room felt cosy and authentic, and the local baths were part of the experience. Dinner and breakfast were both great.

The traditional, quiet village setting felt so authentic. Our Japanese-style room was large and clean, and the Onsen area was spacious too. The Kaiseki menu was top quality, with very fresh local fish and vegetables. Such lovely hospitality in every detail. That’s Japan! 😉🇯🇵💕

The food is centered on fish, and it was very fresh, caught nearby, even though the fish weren't especially large. The deep-fried stonefish was a standout, delicious enough to eat whole. Our clean, comfortable room had flowers in a vase, and there were flowers in the corridor corners too. The women staff served us warmly and seemed a little self-assured. The Ryokan sits along the approach street to a very old shrine, and the street still hints at the town's thriving past. The islands are well known for cycling, with riders enjoying the routes and high bridges.

A group of kind women run this traditional Ryokan and made sure we were comfortable throughout. The food was excellent. They even drove us over from another island so we wouldn't have to wait a long time for the bus, then took us to the place where we collected our rental bikes. I'd stay here again if I'm back in the area.
