Gion Ryokan Karaku

The staff were patient with us, including when we were clueless Americans trying our best, and the food was amazing. We had a tasting dinner and breakfast. I wasn't prepared for everything they served, but I ate it all and was glad I did. There's a touristy shopping area for local items nearby, and several temples and shrines are close enough to walk to. If you're planning a trip to Kyoto, stay here. I can't praise the place enough.

This was our first ryokan stay, and it made a lasting impression. The tatami room was a highlight, with comfortable futon bedding and soft pillows that made for a restful night. It was also spacious and peaceful. The only downside was that there isn't an onsen. Just behind Yasaka Shrine, less than a three-minute walk away, the ryokan gave us a strong sense of Japanese culture. The traditional breakfast is worth trying. It costs a bit more, but the quality, presentation, and experience made it worthwhile. The staff greeted us very politely when we arrived, then showed us the room and explained its layout and amenities. It's a wonderful, relaxing introduction to ryokan stays in Kyoto.

The traditional futon room made the stay feel special, and breakfast was generous. We were also impressed by how helpful and friendly the staff were, often noticing what we needed before we asked. I’d ignore the comments calling them rude. Great spot in the heart of Gion if you want a traditional stay.

I’d happily stay here again if I get the chance. The room felt almost like having a little apartment to myself, and it was the biggest place I stayed during my trip in Japan. Breakfast looked lovely and tasted great, and the staff were wonderful. There’s a shrine and park nearby for a walk, plus plenty of good restaurants about 5-10 minutes away on foot.
