K's Villa Kamogawa and Matsumi

We loved staying in this restored machiya and would definitely return. The upstairs bedroom has gorgeous river views, and the location is excellent. Heated kitchen floors kept us cozy during our February visit. The stairs are quite steep, as they often are in converted machiya, so that could be a concern for anyone with mobility issues. The on-site laundry was out of order during our stay. If needed, you could do laundry at the hostile location nearby, and there’s also a coin laundry close by.

I was struck by how beautiful the house is, both inside and out. The staff were very helpful and quick to work through any problems whenever I called. A beautiful, affordable Kyoto guest house, and I’ll definitely come back!

The river view was so beautiful that I had to push myself to leave for sightseeing. The house has been renovated nicely, with lovely details, and the hosts were helpful and kind. We enjoyed the garden view from the quieter room at the back. I did miss having floor heating upstairs, and the room was hard for me to sleep in because the old, lovely windows let in noise from the busy road across the river. Maybe newer windows would help with both the cold and noise.

I loved how laid-back and rustic the place felt. There was even a record player in the huge room, with a stack of classic records, which was a treat for a big jazz fan like me. The river view through that wide window was worth it, and the house had exactly the traditional feel with just enough modern touches that we wanted. My son loved the big rooms and the view too. I know they don't allow kids anymore. Easily the best place I've ever stayed.
