Sleeping on a tatami mat with a futon was a nice way to experience a traditional Japanese guesthouse, and it worked well for a short stay. The location is great, though the place could be cleaner.

The taxi got stuck in the small alley and we were lost, but someone came out to find us. The staff were kind, and the little tourist info packet covered buses, nearby restaurants, and convenience stores. Our room had heating and AC, which was great in late winter. Getting a taxi in can be tricky.
I hadn't stayed in a guesthouse with shared spaces before, and I had a great time at Guesthouse Maika. Kohei Yamagami, the manager, was courteous and very helpful with dining and sightseeing tips. The place itself was lovely, and being near the Gion district made the location excellent. I'd happily stay again.
It's a quiet place in a residential area, about 20 minutes from Gion. The beds were comfortable, and the owner was friendly. Nothing fancy, but a nice little spot.
The bathrooms were messy and poorly kept, and the hall sink clogged. There were ants in the kitchen, which seemed to come from a lack of cleanliness. It also wasn't as neat or welcoming as the photos suggested. Make sure the man who runs the place is there, rather than the grandson or whoever he is.
