Kigusuriya

We found the futon mattresses more comfortable than expected and slept well. You can ask for extra layers if you need them. It got suddenly cold outside during our October visit, but the room stayed warm. There’s parking across the road if you arrive by car. We were after an authentic experience, and this one-night stay at Ryokan KIGUSURIYA was just what our family of three wanted. The owner welcomed us warmly. We enjoyed the Kaiseki dinner and breakfast, booked time in the onsen with the owner, and took a nice riverside walk in the morning.

They offered us rides in the family car and let us borrow bikes for a lovely ride. The food was excellent, and the bath felt wonderful after a long day of cycling. We had a memorable stay at Kigusuriya and were warmly welcomed and well cared for, even though we don’t know much Japanese. Thank you!

The meals were served in our private dining area, and the teriyaki chicken was cooked at the table with fresh-from-the-farm vegetables. The onsen was brilliant, and since we were on our own, it felt very private. The ryokan was quiet and peaceful. Its website is a little difficult to navigate, and you have to book each day separately. We didn’t know Japanese, but once we arrived, things were straightforward with Google Translate. They arranged station transport for us, including a pickup at Hiyoshi station and a ride to Kayabuki no Sato, the beautiful thatched-house village in Mayama. After a couple of hours, we were picked up again and taken to Kigusuriya. This ryokan had everything we wanted.

The tatami floors are heated, the beds are comfortable, and everything was in very good condition. We especially loved the chicken pot and Japanese breakfast, both spectacular. After a long day of travel, the furo facing the garden was a great place to unwind. I’d definitely recommend Kigusuriya for a comfortable stay in the area.
