I was sad to leave. The river and mountain views, especially the leaves, were mesmerizing, and the lobby felt magical with its tasteful furniture, fancy touches, and Bang & Olufsen speaker playing music. Since it wasn’t crowded, it often felt like we had the place to ourselves. Our room was in the annex and was almost suite-like, with separate living, sleeping, and bathroom areas. The private onsen was huge, could fit two people, and faced the river. The bathroom felt a bit dated, though, and the shower head could use replacing. The food was amazing, and Mr. Tan at the restaurant deserves a special mention. He knew the dishes well and explained them clearly. As an immigrant in Japan, he provided English-language service that helped us understand the food, and he was just as well trained and mannered as any other Japanese staff member. I hope they keep employing people like him and treat him well. I’ve stayed at many ryokans that cost twice as much, and this is still one of my favorites. There were plenty of staff who spoke both English and Japanese, and their service was five-star. I can’t think of anything they should improve on that front. I’d read some reviews that made me a little concerned, but after seeing the place myself, I felt those comments were just racist. I’m glad I went, and I’d choose it again if I return to Kinugawa Onsen.

The facilities were lovely, and the big river was a great feature. Aja was especially warm, smiley, and helpful, and she’s the reason we’d come back. Arjun was friendly too and explained the dinner dishes really well. Thanks to everyone for the top-notch service ♥️

The private onsen and the multi-course dinner and breakfast were the best parts for us. Our room was spacious, with a balcony looking over the river and mountains, and the bathroom was spotless. They also provided complimentary skincare samples and hygiene essentials. We went as a couple at the end of October 2023, and this was one of the highlights of our Japan trip. For anyone heading to Nikko who wants a traditional Japanese inn, it’s good value. The staff were professional and lovely, so I definitely recommend it. Thank you😊

The food was fresh and healthy, though it won’t be to everyone’s taste. The onsen was good, but I thought it was a joke that there was still a bathing tax to pay at checkout after booking and paying. It was quite an experience. The staff were extremely polite and made us feel special. The main downside was how little English there was, as the staff didn’t seem to speak much of it.

For anyone arriving by train, get off at Kinugawa-koen. It’ll save some time getting to the hotel. We stayed one night and were very well looked after. The staff were friendly and considerate, and both dinner and breakfast were delicious and thoughtfully prepared. The prices were very reasonable, and I’d definitely recommend trying it if you’re coming to Kinugawa.
