J-Hoppers Lake Biwa Guesthouse - Hostel

The shared kitchen is open 24/7 and has plenty of equipment. I visited outside the tourist season, so it was quiet. It’s about a 20-minute walk from the JR station.

The setting was so peaceful, with birds singing, grassy space where I could do yoga, and trails nearby that I was keen to hike. It’s right by the lake, and there’s a large bath and clean drinking water. I really enjoyed my bright, spacious mini room in the dorm. The futon mattress was comfortable, though I couldn’t get comfortable with the pillow because it was filled with plastic tubes, so I didn’t use it. The kitchen was the best I’ve seen in a hostel in Japan. Staff were sweet and helpful, even driving me to the grocery store and bus station. It’s a pleasant 15-20 minute walk from the station. I’d happily stay for more nights.

The rooms are fine, and there’s a huge kitchen and shared area where everyone was polite. The couple running the place are super friendly, and Big E is a nice guy who runs the cafe. It’s a fun base for exploring Lake Biwa. They have rental bikes that are in OK shape, though ours had a few minor issues, and they still got us around. There are plenty of barbecue supplies and places to grill, though we didn’t use them. I’d definitely come back one day.

The common areas were cozy for meeting other travelers, and the place was clean and comfortable. Staff were friendly and made me feel at home right away. It’s a convenient spot for exploring Lake Biwa and enjoying some quiet nature. Whether you’re stopping briefly or taking a few days to relax by the lake, it’s a great place to stay.
