Sasebo Green Hotel

The basic rooms aren't fancy, but they were comfortable and well kept. Getting around Sasebo by transport was easy from here, and it felt like good value. The receptionist we met was a bit unfriendly, though maybe he was close to finishing his shift. It's a good place to stay.

The restaurant inside the hotel was beautiful, and the food was amazing. The hotel also has clue spas, and it’s no wonder it fills up quickly. The rooms are small for an American like me, but they’re kept very clean, and room service does a great job tidying them every day. I had a booking problem, but the front desk staff went out of their way to sort it out despite the English-Japanese language barrier. Everyone we came across was extremely friendly and helpful. The Green Hotel is right across from one of Sasebo’s main shopping centers, so I’d say it’s a must-stay.

The two things I liked were the location and the Japanese-style breakfast. Otherwise, this was by far the worst hotel we stayed at in Japan. The first room had yellowed walls from smoke and age, loose wallpaper, a very dirty quilt, carpet stains, and dirt and dead flies on the windowsill. We changed rooms because of that. The quilt was cleaner in the second room, though still not very clean, and the old dirty wallpaper, bathroom, and windowsill were still there. It’s an old, dirty hotel.

It’s been a nice place to stay, and I had a very pleasant visit. The hotel is close to both the train station and downtown, and there’s fresh fish under the back of the building for the sushi restaurant. It has been in Sasebo a long time, with the look of a typical hotel from the late 1970s or 1980s.
