Kariboshi

We live in Miyazaki, but somehow our family had never visited Takachiho before. This time the five of us stayed at Kariboshi. The children were already talking about coming back for an anniversary as we left. The landlady and young owner both had such a gentle air about them. The newly renovated interior still has a historic feel, but it’s very cosy. Our Japanese-style room was spacious enough for all of us to lounge around. We were surprised to find spring water coming from the tap, and Takachiho tea made with it tasted amazing. After an evening walk in the clear air and beautiful sunset, we played a song on the piano in the dining area. The sound and the view from the window felt like a dream. Dinner was a treat, with Takachiho beef, Takachiho rice, and other local ingredients. Even our usually picky eaters loved it, and said, “Mom, we need Takachiho rice at home too!” The wood-fired bath was wonderful too. Soaking there with my daughters, I remember thinking how lovely the moment was. I’ll come see you again, Kariboshi. We found the place by driving up the hill toward the green balloon landmark, where there was a big “Kaliboshi” sign. It’s definitely a spot you’ll want to photograph.

I come back here every year. The renovated inn is clean throughout and works well for families, couples, or groups. The non-smoking rooms are modern and very clean, and there are also smoking rooms. The bath is incredibly comfortable. I think it’s heated with a water heater, but the atmosphere is nice, with stone walls that give it a fairly new feel. There are two washing machines and one dryer. A commercial refrigerator sits by the entrance, with a Coca-Cola vending machine beside it. You can eat dinner elsewhere and bring alcohol back to your room to relax. I recommend it when staying in Takachiho.

The outside looks a little old, but inside it’s been nicely renovated and has a stylish feel. The landlady is kind and gentle, and I’d like to stay again. It’s about a 7-minute drive to Takachiho Gorge, and parking is available. Meals are served in the large first-floor hall. I stayed in a non-smoking room. There’s a designated smoking area inside the building. The toilet, bath, and sink are shared, but all were very clean and stylish. Yukata and face and bath towels aren’t provided, though there are plenty of face towels in the bathroom that can serve as bath towels.

Our room, the facilities, and the bath were all very clean, and we had a flawless stay. From the window we could see across Takachiho town, with a beautiful sunset. The reception and shared communication space had tourist booklets and brochures, plus free coffee and tea. Free towels were available in the bath as well, a thoughtful detail. We made a last-minute booking the day before traveling to Takachiho, and I’d been worried it might not work out. Thank you for helping us so kindly.
