Hidatei Hanaougi

The appeal here is taking time to slow down. It isn’t a place for nightlife, city energy or endless entertainment. We left feeling rested in a way very few luxury stays manage, as if we’d taken a deliberate pause from modern life. Our stay at Hidatei Hanaougi was one of our most memorable ryokan experiences in Japan. It balances traditional hospitality with understated luxury without feeling commercial or performative. The room was spacious and warm, with natural wood and simple Japanese design. Having a private onsen in the room made the stay, especially sitting in the outdoor bath with flowing water and a cold drink after a long drive. It felt restorative, not just “Instagrammable.” Dinner and breakfast were both carefully prepared, with fresh seasonal ingredients and an unhurried pace. The Hida beef stood out, rich but balanced, and the meals felt comforting rather than heavy. Service was sincere and attentive without being intrusive, with a quiet professionalism that made everything seamless.

Dinner in a private room was the highlight. The food was delicious, beautifully presented, and they accommodated our request for gluten-free options. The outdoor pools were fantastic and truly relaxing, and everything we needed was available at the onsen. We’d requested a Japanese-style room for the three of us, though on our short stay we mostly went there to sleep. It was quiet, the mattresses were comfortable, and we slept well. We were also provided with lovely yukata and pajamas. The hotel gave us a fantastic ryokan experience with first-class service. It’s in a very quiet neighbourhood, a bit outside the city centre, like an oasis. Takayama was only one stop on our tour, and we stayed just one night, but I could easily have stayed longer.

My wife is vegan and pregnant, and the staff went out of their way to meet her needs. The person looking after us throughout was kind, attentive and professional. We had excellent dinner and breakfast, with high-quality food and thoughtful details. From the moment we arrived at Hidatei Hanaougi in Takayama, the service was outstanding. We were welcomed at the parking area, our luggage was taken straight to the room, and check-in felt like a royal reception, complete with a welcome drink. The onsen was beautifully designed, relaxing and truly top-level. The hotel is lovely and gave us a memorable stay. Highly recommended.

Jun Ando made our stay unforgettable and really pleasant. He helped fit dinner around our schedule, booked a taxi and adjusted breakfast time to work with our tight agenda. We really enjoyed the hotel, and it deserves five stars, as does Jun. We hope we can come back soon!
