We only stayed one night and left early the next morning. Thankfully, we found the lodge after driving through thick mist and cloud around 5 to 6pm. Please be careful on those roads and avoid driving at night if you can, since the mist can come over at any time. It was cold outside, and the Onsen was so crowded, with tourist buses and groups there, that we couldn't use it. Our Japanese room for four in early Apr felt old and musty, with dim lighting and uncomfortable futon beds. We didn't like the room.

The grounds are beautiful, but the rooms felt damp, musty, and run-down, more like a children's summer camp than a hotel. There may be a bedbug problem: other reviewers have mentioned it, and we broke out in bites a few days after our stay. I can't recommend staying until management deals with it.

The water is good, and the outdoor bath still has a fantastic view. There's a sauna too, though it's odd that there's no cold water bath. I used to give this place five stars for having one of the best onsen views, but about a year ago they put a roof over the outdoor bath. It cut the beautiful blue sky in half. Such a shame. There's less sky, sun, and stars to see now.

The outdoor bath looks out over the hills below and mountains farther off, an amazing view. The onsen itself is clean and modern. Try to time your visit for sunset if you can.

We slept comfortably and had a private Onsen in a traditional japanese style. Dinner was excellent, and breakfast was really fine too.
