There’s no front desk, and the only way to reach the owner is by cell phone. If they don’t answer, you’re stuck. Without contact, it’s treated as a no-show, you can’t stay, and you’re still charged. In the worst case, you could end up sleeping outside. For anyone who needs it, lift the gate and go up to the third floor, where the owner lives. Knock lightly on the back room door. If they don’t hear, you can punch them about three times. The owner will come out yawning and won’t seem apologetic, but you should refrain from punching them. Get the room entry password from them and you’ll be checked in. There are other things to criticize, such as the room being unnecessarily large, anyone being able to get in if they know the password, and no towels. But these are minor compared with being unable to enter at all. There aren’t reasonably priced business hotels in Tateyama, so guesthouses and inns are often the main choices. Still, I think it’s best to pick accommodation with a decent management system.

I had a very bad experience and would strongly advise against staying here, especially if you’re a foreign tourist. I booked one night because the price seemed good, but found out on arrival that there’s no front desk. You have to call for the entry code and other information, and the person who answered spoke only Japanese, which I struggle with. I tried to explain the situation on my first call, but they abruptly hung up. I called several more times, with no answer, and eventually the number seemed to stop working. A receptionist at a nearby hotel kindly came with me and tried calling too, but nobody picked up. We tried to find another way to contact the hotel and got no reply. In the end, I couldn’t access the room I’d paid for. I’d avoid this place.
It was inexpensive, and the room, bathroom, and toilet were clean. Still, two things left me a little uneasy. There were black cap-like items lying around, and the bed had a faint medicinal smell. Also, the room key is kept in a locker hanging on the door, so I wouldn’t recommend it if security is a concern. Neither issue was especially noticeable, but they did bother me a bit.
For personal reasons, I searched for a place to stay and booked through Rakuten Travel at 5:15pm on Saturday. A large room for six was 6,500 yen per person, but towels and other amenities weren’t included, even though it had a bathroom and toilet. Just be aware this is a guesthouse, not a business hotel. Even if you feel disappointed, accept it. I was angry, sorry about that. I probably won’t stay again.
For parking, I found a Times lot on the north side of the station where I could leave the car for 24 hours for 800 yen. It reads the license plate automatically, so there’s no ticket to take and no barrier to lock the car in. On my morning walk, I noticed Kaifudo, a local fish restaurant about five minutes south at the end of a road, was open early. Tateyama Nakamuraya also opens its cafe at 8am, so I was able to have breakfast there.
