Sea Friend

The beds were stiff, though that may be because we booked a cheaper room. Staff were friendly and helpful, and spoke some English. The location was convenient, with interesting things nearby, and the beach and most other places are within walking distance. There’s also a shuttle to and from the port, plus bikes to rent if you’d rather not walk.

We couldn’t make our planned stay at Sea Friend because my wife had an unexpected medical emergency. I contacted them just a few hours before check-in to say we wouldn’t arrive, without asking for a refund or cancellation. They responded with real warmth and concern, wished her well, and proactively allowed us to cancel at no cost even though the booking terms said it was non-cancellable. That kind of sensitivity is rare in hospitality, especially for international travelers in Japan. If you want a place on Tokashiki Island that puts people first, I highly recommend Sea Friend for their heartfelt service.

The meals included with the stay were nice, and the shared toilets and bathroom were very clean. My room was basic but clean, though the window mosquito net was broken, so I couldn’t open the window. The staff tried to help, but communication could be better. For example, they could have told me the off-season charter boat cost JPY7500 before I was surprised by it on the morning I was due to leave.

A fantastic warm place to slow down a bit in winter. Everything was clean, and the staff were friendly and very helpful. When the bus wasn’t running one day, they even drove us to the port. Breakfast was good, especially the mango juice and miso, and they offer lots of activities.
