We chose Shibuya and were glad we did. Harajuku and Shinjuku are close enough to walk to for that downtown Tokyo feel, and train stations make it easy to get elsewhere. Dormy Inn Shibuya cost quite a bit less than other places but still covered everything we needed. The area was quiet, the staff were nice, and the room was what we expected for Tokyo. No complaints, and great value.

The staff were quick to help, which made everything easy, and the location between Shibuya Crossing and Harajuku is handy. Bus and train stations are both fairly close, so getting around Tokyo is simple. The bed was a problem, though: it’s very hard, and the pillows are extremely thin. Late at night, food choices are scarce unless you walk about 20 minutes to one of the one or two places still open. The hot spring looked lovely, but guests with tattoos aren’t allowed in, so I couldn’t use an amenity I’d paid for. I’m undecided about staying here on my next trip.

Getting out of bed was awkward because the bed was tucked into a corner, leaving one person to climb over the other or crawl out at the foot. The window was another concern. A balcony area on the neighboring building was used by people smoking or taking calls, and they had a direct view of the bed. The sheer curtain didn’t give privacy, while the blackout curtain blocked all natural light. Trains passed every few minutes from about 5 a.m. until midnight, and the noise made sleep difficult. The room was clean and tidy, but quite small, with just one very thin, uncomfortable pillow per person, so there was no way to make a thicker stack. I was also frustrated by the laundry restrictions: it was only accessible through the men’s bathhouse on the second floor, unavailable from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and, I believe, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. We needed a taxi at 4:40 a.m. for a group tour leaving at 5, but the reception said we couldn’t book one in advance and nobody would be working then to call one. They suggested going to Don Quijote in the morning to get a taxi. The location is convenient, but the trains and pillows left me sleep deprived and kept me from enjoying the stay. I don’t recommend this hotel and wouldn’t stay again. I’ve attached a video of a train passing, a photo of someone outside our window on a phone call, and a photo showing how thin the pillow is.

The room was small, as is typical for Tokyo, but clean, and the public onsen was good. Free ice cream and complimentary noodles after 21:30 added a welcoming touch. Harajuku, Shibuya, and Meiji Jingu are easy to reach on foot, while the subway just a few steps away made trips to Ebisu and Shimokitazawa especially convenient. The location is hard to beat.

The spa looks modern and focused on wellness, yet its tattoo policy shuts out guests based on appearance. Tattoos can be artistic, cultural, spiritual, or personal; they don’t automatically mean someone is criminal, dangerous, or disrespectful. Being treated as unwelcome or suspicious is alienating, especially for international travelers expecting hospitality and professionalism. Plenty of respectful, clean, peaceful tattooed guests would cause no trouble, but they’re denied access without any nuance, compromise, or designated accommodation. A policy like this doesn’t preserve tradition. It drives away paying customers and reinforces harmful stereotypes. You can’t promote relaxation, acceptance, and self-care while rejecting people this way. In 2026, excluding people simply because they have tattoos feels outdated, discriminatory, and disconnected from modern international culture. I strongly encourage future visitors not to support this business.
