Nanjo Ryokan

The staff are really nice, and the food served in the hall tastes very good. The water is clear and smells of sulfur, and it's 100% natural hot spring water with no circulation. Some rooms also have private bathrooms with 100% natural hot spring water.

The service was nice, and the lobby has good music and decorations. The layout is decent, like a typical Japanese tavern, though the room felt old and the food was just normal. It's in the famous Bessho hot spring area, but getting around isn't convenient and there aren't many sights nearby.

The breakfast here was the best of our whole trip, and the restaurant was very good. We also loved the gardens, the room, and both the indoor and outdoor hot springs. The hotel is quite old, which gives it a nostalgic feel, but it's very well kept and has all the amenities you'd want. Bessho Onsen itself is a magical little village outside Ueda, full of lovely temples and hot springs, and this Ryokan fits right into its atmosphere. The staff were absolutely lovely.

We arrived without a reservation after accidentally booking the wrong hotel, and despite the language barrier, the staff quickly found a room for us and made us comfortable. We were traveling with our 18 month old, and I can't thank them enough for taking us in. The room was incredible, with a wooden tub filled with fresh onsen water and a beautiful garden to walk in. They also provided comfortable yukatas and slippers. One of the kindest men even drew a beautiful card with our daughter's name on it, which we'll cherish forever.
