Sokview Residence

The owner took such good care of us during our three months here. My husband and I loved our stay, and the staff made us feel looked after without going over the top. The river and mountains make an incredible view, and it never got old. Boats would actually stop right in front of the residence to take it in. It’s peaceful, beautiful, and very quiet. We’d come back in a heartbeat.

The beds were comfortable, and the air conditioning worked well without much noise. The location was a problem, though: getting there means taking a dirt track that could easily send an inexperienced scooter rider off their bike, and tuk tuks refuse to go down it. I also wouldn't rent a scooter through them. The one I got had practically useless brakes and felt dangerous. Rooms 102, 202 & 302 don't get a sunset view because a tree blocks it, and the next room's wall cuts off the long river view. I wouldn't recommend staying here or come back myself.

The owner was the part that made this stay especially memorable. She was so welcoming and attentive, and made sure guests felt looked after. The room itself was spotless, neatly arranged, and had a warm feel. Sitting on the balcony with those peaceful Mekong River views was a real highlight, and having basic kitchen utensils meant I could make something with fresh food from the local market. Sokview is a bit away from the busy center of Luang Prabang, which suited me for a quiet retreat. If you're comfortable on a motorcycle, it can be a good way to get around and explore at your own pace. For a calm, clean, new place by the river with genuinely warm service, I'd recommend it. Just think about transportation ahead of time.

I got a newer hotel room with a little kitchen, balcony, river view, cold AC, and a comfortable bed that wasn't hard like beds in many hotels. It was 43 a night, which felt like the best price around. Other run down places in central Luang Prabang cost two or three times as much. Only issue was the TV didn't work. They told me they'd replace it the next day.
