The terrace and its morning view over the foggy hills were my favorite part. The place is just across from Mekong Elephant Park, and I saw a couple of elephants bathing in the morning. They were too far away for a good photo, but the man who runs the place lent me binoculars so I could see them better. That was probably the best morning coffee with a view I’ve had in Southeast Asia. We hadn’t booked ahead. We walked in and paid 50 000 kip, about £5, for a double room for the night. It’s humble but clean, quiet apart from the roosters in the morning, and there was free coffee and biscuits. I travel on a tight budget and didn’t find it expensive, especially for a small town where people clearly depend a lot on travellers. If you expect to be pampered all the time and for everyone to speak perfect English, why do the slow boat or come to Laos at all?

The sink water ran straight onto the bathroom floor, so you end up standing in your own toothpaste. We stayed one night after arriving without a booking, since we’d read it was easy to find a room. This guesthouse was one of the only options, and the only room available was beside the restaurant and kitchen. It was moldy, and the blankets didn’t feel very clean.

Nouan and her husband gave me such a warm welcome. I loved the delicious food and the conversations, and they gave me the best roof over my head in Pakbeng. The Mekong River view was brilliant, and my large room was very clean. I had a perfect two-night stay in this lovely guesthouse and would gladly come again. Thank you so much.

A friendly, family-run guesthouse overlooking the Mekong, with the slow boat dock off to the left. The misty mountain views in the morning are lovely. They can accommodate bicycles, and English and Vietnamese are spoken. Just right for a short stay.

The family treated us like one of their own, and we had a really nice time. Our room was clean and comfortable. You can find more luxurious places for the same price, but choosing to stay with this family was a great decision. We’d come back.
