Ginza Rest is right on Ampitiya-Kandy main road, with easy access to historic Kandy. It’s family-run, and the place has the feel of staying in someone’s home. The management is warm and hospitable, and they can prepare Sri Lankan food and drinks hygienically if you ask. Room prices are fair as well. I’d recommend it for a family or group holiday.

I came here for a homestay feel rather than a social traveller scene, and that suited me. The family are kind and generous. They shared a family meal with me one evening and offered tea or coffee for free. The room was huge, with a fan, comfortable bed, towel and toilet paper. There’s hot water too. Some rooms have AC, but I didn’t need it. It’s good value and on Ampitiya road. I walked into town each day. The road is a bit narrow, and there was some construction in March 2019. Coming back, you can take a bus to Ampitiya for 15 rupees. Get off at the post office and walk back about two minutes to Ginza. Breakfast may look pricey, but I thought it was worth it. It included fruit, tea or coffee, roti, daal, coconut sambol and an omelette.

After travelling through a lot of places, we needed somewhere to rest and get our energy back, and Ginzas Rest was just right. Ginza and her Son made us feel like family. The Sri Lankan breakfast was delicious, and there’s even a doctor in-house. Kandy can be so busy, but this is in a quieter part of town and still quick and easy to reach. We mostly walked to the centre and back. Tuk Tuk drivers might say it’s far, but they’re trying to promote their own places. The place is spacious and very tidy, quiet at night, and had one of the best bathrooms of our trip. We didn’t have mosquitos either. I can highly recommend it.

The host and her son were really helpful, and their cooking was so good. One of the best homestays we’ve ever had. If you’re staying in Kany, I recommend this place.

Good value for the money, and the morning tea was tasty. If you’re travelling with older adults, remember to request a ground-floor room. You’ll also need to ask if you want AC.
