I only had one night and one morning in Sigiriya, but Shalika helped me make the most of it and pointed me in the right direction. He picked me up at the bus stop, took me to the hostel, then went back into town and brought lunch for me. He’s an incredible host, and as a local he knows everyone, from tuk tuk drivers to tour guides. The hostel is tucked off the main road, right behind a beautiful temple and Buddha statue, and within walking distance of Sigiriya Rock. It used to be a monastery, which is pretty cool. I had delicious lunch and a wonderful breakfast with traditional Sri Lankan dishes, plus tea or coffee whenever I wanted. There’s wifi and a ceiling fan, which was plenty for me. Mosquitoes can be around, but the beds have nets, and from what I found, most places in Sigiriya are similar. I got a full local experience hanging out with Shalika and meeting his parents and friends. Everyone was so welcoming. I’ll definitely come back. Cheers machang!

My friend and I spent a few days exploring here in summer, and it was a great local experience. The hostel is beside jungle where wild elephants roam, and the owner runs safaris. A beautiful Buddhist temple with a huge statue is just behind it. The building has a roof sloping toward a hole in the middle, with a pool and a tree growing up through it, a bit like a courtyard. Rooms with bathrooms sit around the square. The place is simple, but very clean, and that won’t bother you if you’d rather experience local life than stay in a western-style hotel. The owner is one of the friendliest, most interesting people you’ll meet. He knows the area well, speaks fluent English, and has worked as a tour guide for a few years. He understands what tourists like and can recommend places or guide you, probably for a fee. He cooks wonderful food, as do the people at the restaurant where he works, Chill House, I think.

I was traveling alone in Sri Lanka when I met Sharlika, who turned out to be the perfect host. He was so kind, drove well, and took me to lots of cities. He knows everyone in Sri Lanka and is always finding activities you’re sure to enjoy. Thanks for everything, Sharlika is the best. I’d choose him without hesitation if I come back. His hostel feels like a jungle, but it’s peaceful and easy to sleep there without stress. We meditated together, and breakfast was amazing, with lots of good food!

In the middle of the jungle, near a beautiful stupa, Shalika’s place is perfectly situated. The tree in the middle of the house is so beautiful, and we saw so many stars. It was a magic moment. He can show you secret spots and share lots of advice. Very local, he knows everyone and everything about Sri Lanka! I really recommend him and his guesthouse if you want to get away from everyday life.

The hosts are such good people, and this is a beautiful hostel. They made us feel at home and cooked a delicious breakfast. One of the best hosts I’ve met in Sri Lanka.
