Hotel Agdal

The room was simple and clean, and I liked the woman who made the special breakfast. There was also a pool. The place has the look of a faded former glory, like it used to be fancy. The first three days, the WiFi didn’t work. We laughed a lot at how slowly the people moved and how slow the elevator was. If you have a sense of humor, you can enjoy the experience. Walking to the city center takes 40 minutes.

The facilities are basic, but the location works well, close to bus stations, the modern part of the city and the airport. The AC worked, which was a bonus, though only the staff could operate it. When I got sick and needed to stay another night, they helped extend my stay without any fuss.

The pool view was the only good part. My room wasn’t ready at midday, and although I’d reserved for two people, my friend wasn’t allowed to visit. They still charged me for two. After I went out for the day, I returned to find a major leak across the bathroom floor. The cleaner mopped it, but it kept leaking, and by late night it had happened again. I’m leaving tomorrow to return to the other place where I stayed for the last two days.

The rooms were clean, the staff friendly and helpful, and the balcony was nice. It’s cheap accommodation in a great city, so if you keep your expectations in check, it can be a good stay. The location is handy for the new part of town, and the Medina is a manageable walk away. There are plenty of signs of age. The hotel is one of the oldest in marrakech, and it shows: the plumbing makes noises like a mating walrus, and parts of the place are very dark, as if there’s a shortage of light bulbs. The breakfast was basic but fine. The TV had no remote, though there wasn’t anything on anyway. Don’t expect luxury. One small annoyance: I paid my tax twice. Get a receipt if you pay in advance. Make up your own mind, but save your money here and spend it on more interesting things.
