Riad Dar Ftouma

The place is nice and very central for the souks, but there seemed to be an air quality problem and they weren’t forthcoming about addressing it. We arrived late and had a disastrous first night. The next day, they switched off the AC while cleaning, and the room smelled again. The AC helped, but it still felt damp and smelled. I doubt it’s healthy to stay there for long.

The room was okay, though my friend was disappointed because it didn't look like the online photos. The front desk was more frustrating: we had to ask before getting basic information like breakfast, and the guy didn't know the nightly price or the police number and location. He even tossed the coins down from upstairs and made us pick them up. It wasn't all bad, but after better stays at other riads, I wouldn't really recommend this one.

I only discovered at check-in that there was no room for me until the following day. Nobody had told me in advance, and when I asked about a call, I was told a message had been sent, though I never received one. They sent me to another riad, which I actually liked, so I tried to cancel this booking, but couldn't. Despite the claim of a 24-hour reception, no one answered my calls or emails. Finding the place was already a little difficult, even with people trying to give directions.

The one practical catch is that they only take cash. Apart from that, my father and I had a wonderful stay. The food was so good that we ate there every night, and were completely happy each time. Their tagine is world class. The Riad itself is gorgeous and quaint, with a lovely rooftop patio for lounging in the evening or tanning during the day, plus a small dip-pool. Our room was a decent size and charmingly traditional, with air conditioning, TV, and internet. The staff were kind and helpful, and treated us like family. One of them even walked us to Jamaa el'Fna Square and showed us around. I can't praise the place enough.
