Finding Idris within the first half hour settled our doubts about choosing a riad in the Medina over a shiny chain hotel outside the walls. He was so welcoming and thoughtful that we assumed he owned the place. He gave us useful local advice on getting around, places to visit and where to eat, and made us feel like friends rather than guests. We’re already hoping to see him in the UK one day and return even a little of the kindness he showed us. The birthday surprise was especially touching: one evening we came back to our room to find a cake for my fiancée and a handwritten card. The riad hadn’t arranged it, and we hadn’t asked; Idris had done it himself. He puts his heart into his work, and that kind of consideration is rare. Breakfast was served each morning, and Idris made it feel personal by stopping to chat and ask how we’d slept. He made us feel as if we were the only guests there. He was a huge part of what made our time in Marrakech special.

I spent three nights at Riad Nowara, and it was the best part of my trip. After busy days exploring, coming back to such a beautiful, clean and relaxing place felt like a real retreat. Three nights wasn’t enough, and I’d definitely return. The meals were fresh, authentic and full of flavour, among the best I had on the whole visit.
