Paulos Valletta

The staff were a real highlight. They helped with our luggage at arrival, since there's no lift from the entrance level, and packed breakfast for us when we had to leave very early for the Sicily ferry. Breakfast itself was simple but good, with eggs cooked as requested. The room was comfortable and spacious, and staying in the traditional building felt more like seeing how locals live than being in a standard hotel. It's closer to a well-kept Airbnb or B&B, so set expectations accordingly. We had Room 102. Its shower is very small, and at about 165 cm (5'5") I found it tight. Taller or larger guests may prefer another room. In cooler weather the heater takes a while to deliver hot water, and the single air-conditioning/heating unit doesn't warm the large room much, so extra layers may help in winter. There's also a short flight of stairs to reach the lift from any floor. Charming place and kind people, with some quirks. It seems better suited to a warmer-weather stay.

Breakfast was very satisfying, especially up in the roof garden, where the view is outstanding. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the room was clean, spacious, fully equipped, with a really good mattress. We were in room 102, though, and the shower is too small if you're over 1.65. There was a bit of a damp smell in one of the two bedrooms and in the bathroom, although dampness seems common across Malta. The interior is beautifully decorated, even though the outside looks old and rather neglected. Valletta's buildings are very old in general. It's a two-minute walk from the main streets and prices are reasonable. I recommend it.

The rooftop views were amazing. The room was comfortable and very nice, and breakfast was okay.

I was there for five business days. The owners and staff are lovely, and the location is perfect. There's a lot of character in the decoration, with little details that give the place a real soul. My room was huge and had a coffee machine. Getting in by code was easy, and self check-in worked well when arriving late. Breakfast was the one letdown. There are plenty of good places to eat nearby, including a nice food court just next door, though. I'd definitely recommend staying here.
