I picked Zihuatanejo for the same reason the writers did: it's smaller, quieter, and feels more like a hideaway in real Mexico. I got exactly that. The hotel is comfortable and keeps improving, with a whole team there each day managing, supporting, and working on the place. My spacious apartment was home for two weeks, and the pool was just steps away. Most days I practically had it to myself. The family pool is on the other side. Fresh food markets are only steps away, with the world's best produce, especially the avocados and magnificent mangos. There are plenty of places to eat, but don't miss meeting Horatio in the café. Ask him to make whatever food or drinks you like. With strawberries from the strawberries lady, you can have a margarita or daiquiri, or whatever you name. Or let him draw you into the real traditions of their culture. I found him a relatable ambassador for many meaningful parts of Mexico's long-held cultural heritage. The main beach is a short walk, and several more are easy to reach on foot, by bike, or by taxi.
