The second receptionist spoke roughly, and the whole experience left me with a bad impression of the management. After booking online, I was told the hotel only accepted walk-ins. The first receptionist, a kind and helpful Chinese man, said they hadn't received anything from Agoda. Thinking it might be part of the OYO chain, I tried booking there too, but the next receptionist said the hotel had nothing to do with Agoda or OYO, perhaps not anymore. I spent hours dealing with Agoda and then OYO support while they looked into alternatives, cancellation, and a refund. OYO initially wanted to charge a cancellation penalty because I wouldn't accept the hotel they proposed relocating me to, but eventually agreed to refund me in full. Agoda also gave me some compensation for the last-minute hassle of finding somewhere else myself. I won't stay here again.
There are halal food options nearby, which is convenient for Muslim travellers. It's in the old town, close to the bus station and tamu muhibbah.
Agoda cancelled my booking at Joy Inn without telling me, so I ended up checking in at 98inn. Luckily they had one room left 😭 The room was clean and comfortable, with a heater that worked well and effective air conditioning. I'm grateful they had space, and I'd stay here again.
The room was comfortable, clean, and came with free Wi-Fi. The water heater worked well, and there was a kettle for making hot drinks. I also noticed CCTV and a water dispenser on each floor, plus a fire escape plan on the room door. At RM88, the standard room with a queen bed was reasonably priced. The downside was that the convenience store next door closed very early, around 8pm, so reaching a 7 Eleven or ATM meant walking two blocks. It also felt quite isolated at night, with most shops closed. I'd still recommend 98 inn for a short one-night stay in Miri.
There’s a weekly market around the hotel, and most Miri attractions are within walking distance. The room was spacious and good value for the money.
