Auberge Jeunesse Nouméa

Known as Auberge Jeunesse Nouméa as well, this is a comfortable, clean, well-organised youth hostel in Noumea city. The price is reasonable next to nearby hotels, and the staff are friendly. They even let us check in early. Great value for a stay in the city.

The church bells going off every hour, even early in the morning, were annoying. I was lucky my room wasn’t full, so I could take a lower bunk. The upper bunk felt like there was a real chance of rolling off and falling. Apart from that, it’s a good, conveniently located hostel with a city view. It’s the cheapest option in town for budget travellers.

The reception staff worked hard, welcomed us, and gave really helpful advice about where to go and what to do. Thanks, Sophie! It’s close to the town centre and, all things considered, probably the best budget place to stay. During the day the area was fine, though I didn’t feel safe walking to or from it after dark. The place is very basic, not entirely clean or comfortable, and the internet is weak and only works in the common areas. There are great views, but town noise carries at night. The outside light also keeps switching on and off whenever someone moves on the balcony.

The main drawbacks are the check-in gap from 12 to 2, early-closing shops, and not many nearby places to eat. Staff also advised against taking the nearby stairs because drunk or high locals often sit there in the evenings. Still, the staff are lovely, the rooms are clean, and it’s a cheap place to stay.
