We had a lovely Christmas and birthday stay, from 23rd - 27th December 2025, and would consider Grand Canal Boutique Hotel again when we return to Amsterdam. The staff were the best part: after a free airport transfer, we were welcomed with kindness and help. We arrived before check-in, left our bags, and were offered an email if the room became ready before 3pm. The lobby had free tea, coffee, fruit, and a resident cat who enjoyed head scratches. Staff were always ready with a chat, nearby tips, or directions, but were just as happy to offer a smile and wave when we were tired from sightseeing and out of social energy. The hotel is tucked on a quiet street near cafes, shops, and convenience stores, with access to both central Amsterdam and the outer areas. Location was our main reason for booking. We paid for unlimited tram travel but barely needed it. Our room was at the back, away from street noise, though it had no canal view. There was a balcony with a table and chairs, which would be especially nice in summer. The room was gorgeous, with plenty of space and storage. The only mirror was in the bathroom, a bit awkward for two people getting ready, and the TV was small and far from the bed. Neither bothered us much. The bed seemed to be two single mattresses under one double topper, and they drifted apart overnight, so we pushed them back together each morning. It's an old house converted into a hotel, so you can hear other guests going about their day. We had one night of late footsteps from upstairs. If you're walking around your room for a while, it seems considerate to take your shoes off for anyone below. Rooms are accessed by stairs only, which was made clear before our stay. We didn't mind the stairs, and climbing them warmed us up after the below-zero weather. Cleaning is every third day, though you can ask for it sooner. We saw that breakfast room service was available, but as vegans we preferred to find food that suited us ourselves. Thanks to everyone who helped make our stay so lovely.

The location wasn't enough to make up for the poor service and attitude, and I wouldn't recommend staying here. There are other places at the same or lower price that offer better value. We found the room wasn't especially clean when we arrived, and when we raised cleanliness concerns, staff got defensive and rude. At checkout, they even blamed us for the hotel's lack of hygiene. There were no amenities and no room service at all, which I found unacceptable for a hotel calling itself “boutique.” The reception staff in particular felt unprofessional and unwelcoming.

The Grand Canal Boutique Hotel was a great fit for my wife and me. Our room was comfortable and spotless, with a lovely canal view, and the staff made us feel welcome with friendly, attentive service. The hotel is peaceful but still within walking distance of the heart of Amsterdam. You can't beat that location. I'd happily come back on another visit and recommend it to others.

The location was the one good thing. The room was scruffy and looked nothing like the photos. A cable tie was holding the bed together, and the mattress was much too soft and uncomfortable. It was bigger than the bed, with both the mattress and topper hanging over the edge. The heating didn't work, the bath plug fitting was falling apart, and I had to pull the plug out by hand. The TV didn't work, with wires dangling out of it. Each morning we had to go down to reception to get more tea bags, and when we checked out nobody asked how the stay had been. Decent, I suppose, but if this is Amsterdam's 13th best hotel, I hate to imagine what the lower-ranked ones are like.

The room was huge, with a double bed, safe, desk, fridge, lounge chair, and more. The staff were wonderful, informative, and helpful, and the location is central to everywhere we wanted to go. I don't think a 3.1 Google rating is fair. There were a couple of small annoyances: no door stopper, so the bathroom door had to stay closed even when my girlfriend and I wanted to chat while getting ready, and no daily room cleaning, so the garbage filled up quickly. I'd stay again.
