Paleis Hotel

After a day of trains and sightseeing, it felt like coming home. We spent seven days here on our honeymoon, using Den Haag as our base to explore Holland, and the hotel made a lovely place to return to each evening. It’s right in the center, close to the main sights and within walking distance of the train station. The building has been fully renovated but still has the warmth and charm of Dutch houses. Our room had a proper bathroom, unlike what you find in some modern hotels. Breakfast was good value, and check-in and check-out were easy to do online, with the AI assistant or with the welcoming staff. There’s also an elevator, so you don’t have to haul luggage up Dutch stairs.

The hotel sits in the beautiful old part of the city, and our cozy room looked out over the backyard. The bed was comfortable. Staff were very friendly, and communication by WhatsApp and email was excellent. Breakfast was good quality and fairly priced, with good coffee or cappuccino. The food selection isn’t huge, but there’s absolutely enough for a normal breakfast. You can reserve a hotel parking space a few metres away. The streets are very narrow, so a large car such as a bigger SUV or family bus might be a problem; our car was fine.

The hotel is a lovely old Dutch house, and the rooms are lovely too. Downstairs there’s a great living room where you can relax, with sweet treats as an extra. Staff were very friendly, and I liked the idea of using a digital key. The central spot means bars and restaurants outside bring some noise. I was also puzzled that the cups and glasses weren’t replaced during room cleaning, so we had to wash them ourselves in the bathroom. There were coffee pods and tea bags, but no milk in the room.

The location and cleanliness were good, but a serious security breach ruined the stay. In November, criminals gained access to the hotel's Booking.com account and used its official chat to obtain my booking details. They then stole my credit card information through a phishing link. The hotel confirmed the breach, and I filed a formal complaint with the Dutch Data Protection Authority (AP). Yet for over a month, management has not provided the investigation report it promised or resolved the question of compensation. The last promised update was for December 1st. The lack of transparency and urgency in responding to a data breach is unacceptable. Future guests should be extremely cautious when booking here.
