The garden is a lovely place to unwind after a busy day in Kathmandu, and the vegetarian food is both tasty and varied. I also enjoyed having breakfast outdoors. Chandra Ban Retreat sits on the mountainside at the edge of the city, with a wonderful view, and the rooms are clean, fresh, and cozy. The staff are very kind and try to help with what you need. There’s a nice yoga studio too. I stayed at Chandra Ban in October 2018 and again in 2019, loved both visits, and plan to return. I can really recommend it as a peaceful place.

Our lunch was a vegetarian Thali set with delicious curries, followed by a simple cake and ice cream dessert. The Chandra Ban garden and grounds are beautiful, a lush, calm hillside looking out over Kathmandu. Even the yoga room has that same view.

I hated having to leave Chandra Ban. It’s set on a steep slope above smoggy Kathmandu, with a beautiful garden full of flowers, trees, and sculptures tucked among the greenery. You can head into the capital from here or leave your things and go up into the hills, so it makes a good base for exploring Nepal. It has the calm and green feel of a retreat, the warmth of a family B&B, and the useful comforts of a resort without the noise, kitsch, or crowds. The Anglo-Italian family who run it call it a retreat, B&B, or eco resort online, but none quite captures it. I’d describe it as a luxurious boutique hotel for people who love nature, Tibet, and art. The owner spent many years as a Tibetan monk and now collects Tibetan art and furniture. The house feels like a stately home filled with those pieces, but the rooms also have modern conveniences such as kettles, TVs, and showers. The staff were all friendly and helpful, and the food was superb. One thing to know: there’s a huge St. Bernard who may intimidate some guests, since he growls and barks at newcomers even though he’s very affectionate. People who dislike dogs may want to avoid the place.

A calm place with lovely views and great food, plus easy access to beautiful shivapuri forest. Just right for a few days of much-needed downtime.
