I felt unsafe coming back late at night. The hotel was shut up and, after I rang the outside bell, it took about 15 minutes for anyone to answer. I was then told there'd be a $50 fee because I couldn't find my key. The kiosk had only issued one key. Thankfully, friends who'd dropped me off in an Uber stayed nearby rather than leave me alone in the cold, isolated area. After half an hour, someone who lived there, but didn't work for Sebel, came outside and let me in with a master key. He couldn't give me a key of my own. It was bizarre, and I couldn't believe no hotel staff were on site. I'd understand that with an Airbnb, but this is an international hotel chain. I won't be back. The check-in was strange from the start. There was nobody around, just a self-service kiosk, which felt impersonal. Since I'd parked in the hotel car park, I wanted to tell them so my car wouldn't be towed. I rang a bell, and a staff member came over complaining that I'd interrupted her lunch. She was rude, gave me a form to write down the registration, and I went to my room. The room itself was spacious and generally good, though the shower tiles had soap scum ingrained in them.

I got to the room only to find it was smaller than I'd expected and had two single beds. There was no front desk to raise this with, and as a Platinum member I know how unresponsive the ACCOR desk can be. I was disappointed. It took a while just to get into the hotel, since I hadn't realized there was no longer a front desk. Once inside, I had to check in at a kiosk.

For a place advertising itself as a 4 star serviced apartment hotel, having no reception area or receptionist at any time of day feels very low grade and unprofessional. You're left to use a self-check-in kiosk when you arrive, with nobody available to help with questions or speak to during check-in.

We booked at the last minute and stayed for 8 days. The team were fantastic throughout, quick to respond whenever we needed something, from car parking to extra coat hangars and even finding a tin opener. The one-bedroom apartment was spacious and got lovely morning sun, so it was very warm. We could hear the trains and ferries, but it wasn't too loud for us. With our own car, the location worked well for working and visiting around the Greater Wellington Region. Thorndon New World is walkable, and the city is a bit further on foot. We'd happily stay again when we're back in town and highly recommend it.

We come to The Sebel Wellington Thorndon several times a year. It's easy to get to, and we can walk to all the main Wellington spots. The rooms are consistently clean, roomy and well looked after, and the staff are always friendly and very helpful.
