Bairro Alto Guesthouse

The location is excellent and the place itself is okay, but we had no running water. The guesthouse wouldn't compensate us for one of our two nights. Without water, I can't recommend staying here. I wouldn't return, and if anything goes wrong, you're left to deal with it on your own.

Bairro Alto Guesthouse made for a great stay. It's right in the middle of Lisbon, close to everything, and good value if you want somewhere clean and comfortable on a budget. We could explore the city on foot and would happily come back.

The room was spotless, housekeeping came each day to change the sheets, refresh the towels, and top up the soap, and the air conditioning worked. The owner sent us several messages before arrival with all the entry code details. The location was perfect for walking everywhere, and Ubers were easy to get. We were very happy here and would stay again. Noise was the only drawback. Our room faced a busy sidewalk, with people partying and music often going until around 2-4am. We were out late too, so it didn't bother us most nights, but before our 7am flight one night, the noise kept us from sleeping. Thicker window glass might help, though soundproofing a room is difficult.

The building entrance, guesthouse, and room each had a different door code. Inside, the room was very clean, decorated in a pleasant modern style, and had A/C and shower soap. The area has lots of busy bars, though, and street crowds stay noisy until the early morning. Light sleepers will struggle without earplugs.
