Best Western Plus Kalmarsund Hotell

The staff are really helpful and friendly, and the cosy lounge overlooking the road is a nice place to spend the evening with the free coffee. Coffee and tea are available in the lobby all day, and sparkling water is free too. Breakfast is included and very good, and the hotel is excellent value thanks in large part to its location. The rooms, though, are VERY small. The lighting is inadequate, there’s no closet or clothing shelves, and the four outlets are awkwardly placed. We had to put the kettle on the windowsill to reach one. The mattress is soft, and the rooms stay comfortably warm. Laundry is charged per item. Kalmar doesn’t have a coin laundry.

I only got a short look at the hotel because I arrived late and left early, so I didn’t stop for breakfast and can’t comment on it. Staff were polite. The room was decent overall, though a bit rough around the edges: the windows were dirty and poorly sealed. The bed was comfortable enough, with an adjustable mattress, but its controls were quite dusty when I tried them. There were different pillows for different sleep preferences and a fridge in the room. One major annoyance was having no power outlet by the bed, which I’d expect at a hotel. This was certainly better than another Best Western I stayed at in Copenhagen.

The buffet breakfast was easily the best part of our stay, and the hotel is well placed among restaurants and bars. The rooms are standard, but clean and cared for, with Rituals products provided as a lovely extra. We booked partly to use the spa, only to find it closed. The website hadn’t mentioned that, which felt unprofessional. We could hear noise from neighbouring rooms and upstairs, and our room was cold during the day.

I’m sitting here now, happy I chose this hotel. The staff have been so friendly, greeting us in the morning with big smiles. Breakfast was incredible, almost too good. My room was bigger than I expected, with a comfy bed and a large bathroom. The halls may not be newly renovated, but there’s plenty else to appreciate. It’s beautifully located right by the sea, and the outdoor pool, spa area and picnic tables all look out over the waterfront.
