The staff were friendly and the breakfast wasn’t too bad, which are the only reasons I’m giving three stars. The room was cramped, with more furniture than needed and an extra third bed. One bed’s headboard was literally leaning against the bathroom door. I complained and they kindly moved me to another room, but the shower curtain was nasty. They need to clean the bathrooms better and make the rooms more comfortable, beyond just having a bed to sleep in.

The staff were attentive and friendly, and the rooms were spotlessly clean. Hotel San Jose Hostal has a charming, welcoming feel and a quiet, comfortable atmosphere, a nice place to unwind after exploring. Breakfast had a good variety of fresh, tasty choices. We had a fantastic stay and would recommend it to anyone visiting Salvador.

The morning staff member makes a good breakfast, and it’s included in the price. This is a good-value place to stay in San Salvador, with a secure property. Nobody seemed to speak English, but the woman used Google Translate and we managed fine, so don’t let that put you off. There are a few nice dinner spots within walking distance, and a taxi into the city costs around $5.

I came back after ten years, and it was gratifying to find the same excellent attention and service, along with the warmth of the place. If you’re looking for somewhere humble, quiet, and peaceful within the city, with the quality of a small hotel, this is my recommendation for staying in San Salvador.
