The Cocoon Hostel

I keep returning to this hostel when I’m in Bangkok. The staff are cool and helpful, and it’s a no frills, no drama place where you can have a peaceful stay. It’s near lots of malls, shopping areas, and restaurants. I especially enjoy meeting guests from all over SE Asia. I’ve shared stories with some really interesting, cool people here. The bathroom gets 1/10 from me. It looked very dirty, with black mold on the shower walls, smelled bad, and had no exhaust fan. There was a window, but it was shut, so I opened it to clear the odor. The hostel had no soap, shampoo, or hand wash by the sink. The dorms are a 4/10: stained sheets and curtains, poor ventilation and a smell in the rooms, plus mosquitoes. Lots of people were sneezing too. There’s one small locker, right on the bed where you can hit your head, and you have to bring your own lock. The dorm doors aren’t locked, so security is low. One person snored, though that’s not the hostel’s fault. The common area gets 6/10. It has a really comfortable two seater sofa and a cool map on the wall, but all the shoes are lined up like at a school assembly. You need to remember a password code to open the door, there’s no card key, and the mosquitoes were there again. People were loud, which also isn’t the hostel’s fault. In the kitchen, one of the two fridges didn’t work and smelled bad. There was no breakfast or snacks, and only regular drinking water, no hot or cold water. It’s a 20 minute walk from SIAM centre.

The owner was friendly, which I appreciated, but I didn’t enjoy staying here. The air conditioner in the room was distracting and noisy. The bathroom needed attention and seemed due for renovation; several toilets weren’t clean, and there was lots of hair in the basin.

I’m Asian, so don’t compare this hostel to Nordic clean style 😂. You get what you pay for, and what’s provided is enough. I stayed four days in a six bed room. The beds were clean and spacious, but thin and hard like stone. There’s a locker, but watch your head 😂, and bring your own key. The room door locks easily, but anyone can open it. They provide a towel, while the bathroom has no shampoo or soap. Wifi is good.
