We eventually found somewhere to stay, but it took a lot of effort to find an honest hotel. The next day we checked several places listed as available on Booking, and each said in person that those rooms weren’t available, offering only a “deluxe” room at three times the price. This came after our own booking had fallen apart. I’d reserved through Booking a month ahead, then on check-in day got a notice that payment couldn’t be processed. Three different cards I’d just used elsewhere all produced the same error. I messaged the hotel through Booking and got no answer, and their phone was switched off. When we arrived, they said our room had been given away and nothing else was available, then offered to send us to a worse hotel for more money. The area was extremely dirty, with sketchy people in the street. I suspect many Google Maps and Booking reviews are fake. I’ve seen this same tactic in India.

The lobby is really beautiful, and the staff were friendly and accommodating. They even helped carry my luggage in my Uber. It’s an old building with no elevator, and the price reflects that. The location is good, close to istiklal street. You get what you pay for, though there’s plenty of room for the hotel to improve.

I stayed here twice, and both times added to what was one of the worst experiences of my life. The alley up to it is very steep, there’s no room service, and it’s noisy. The place was dirty, with cockroaches everywhere, stained sheets, and a moldy bathroom. There was no safety box, and I had to ask repeatedly for shampoo and soap. Breakfast was poor and never changed; I even found hair in it, and saw the person handling the food sneeze on the bread. Several people at the hotel told me there were mice, though I didn’t see any myself.

Amir at reception was especially warm and considerate, and really took responsibility for guests’ comfort. The staff were amazing, friendly, and polite. Thanks so much to Amir and Mr. Hossein. 👏🏻🌹
